Kurzgeschichten von Rudyard Kipling aus dem Sammelband "A Day's Work": 1. Die Br ckenbauer (The Bridge-Builders) In dieser technisch sehr detaillierten Erz hlung beschreibt Kipling den Bau einer Eisenbahnbr cke ber den "heiligen Fluss" Ganges. Als die Br cke kurz vor der Fertigstellung und Einweihung steht, gef hrdet ein Hochwasser die Konstruktion. Der britische Chefingenieur setzt alles daran, um sein Lebenswerk zu retten, wird jedoch zusammen mit seinem indischen Vorabeiter auf eine kleine Flussinsel abgetrieben. Unter dem Einfluss von Opium hat er Visionen von den hinduistischen Gottheiten. Die beiden werden gerettet, die Br cke bersteht die Flut. 2. Ein schreitender Abgesandter (A Walking Delegate) Dies ist die einzige Geschichte in diesem Band, welche nicht bersetzt, sondern inhaltlich nur erkl rt wurde. Der Grund ist, dass Kipling in dieser Erz hlung gro z gig verschiedene amerikanische Dialekte verwendet, welche nicht ohne weiteres auf europ ische Verh ltnisse bertragen werden k nnen. Die Geschichte spielt auf einer Farm in Vermont, der Heimat von Kiplings amerikanischer Frau Carrie. Sie handelt von einem gelben Pferd, das die anderen Pferde aufzuwiegeln versucht. 3. Das Schiff, das sich selbst einschliff (The Ship That Found Herself) Ein schottisches Frachtschiff unternimmt seine Jungfernfahrt von Liverpool nach New York. In dieser ebenfalls sehr technischen Geschichte sprechen die diversen Schiffsbauteile miteinander, um sich aufeinander einzuschleifen. 4. Das Grab seiner Ahnen (The Tomb Of His Ancestors) Diese Erz hlung spielt wieder im kolonialen Indien. Ein junger britischer Offizier, der seinem verstorbenen Gro vater u erlich sehr hnlich sieht, kehrt nach Indien zur ck. Aufgrund der hnlichkeit halten ihn die Einheimischen f r eine Wiedergeburt seines dort bestatteten Gro vaters, der Enkel merkt davon jedoch lange Zeit nichts.
