"Je n'ai pas l'intention d' crire un trait d'apiculture ou de l' levage des abeilles. Tous les pays civilis s en poss dent d'excellents qu'il est inutile de refaire (...) Il ne s'agit pas davantage d'une monographie scientifique de lapis mellifica ligustica fasciata etc., ni d'un recueil d'observations ou d' tudes nouvelles. Je ne dirai presque rien qui ne soit connu de tous ceux qui ont quelque peu pratiqu les abeilles... Ma part se bornera de pr senter les faits d'une mani re aussi exacte, mais un peu plus vive, les m ler de quelques r flexions plus d velopp es et plus libres, les grouper d'une fa on un peu plus harmonieuse qu'on ne le peut faire dans un guide, dans un manuel pratique ou dans une monographie scientifique. Qui aura lu ce livre ne sera pas en tat de conduire une ruche, mais conna tra peu pr s tout ce qu'on sait de certain, de curieux, de profond et d'intime sur ses habitants..." Ouvrage singulier avec la Vie des Abeilles, Maeterlinck pose les bases de l'ethnographie animale en litt rature. En observant le monde des abeilles essentiellement crit d'un point de vue philosophique et thologique tout en proc dant par analogies avec l'homme, son livre pose de v ritables questions sociales. Ce chef-d'oeuvre de la litt rature belge est aussi celui d'un fin naturaliste et d'un observateur de la vie f ru de science, dont l'un des plus grands savants de son temps dira: Il est notre ma tre tous .
